For Emma, Forever Ago was famously recorded by Justin Vernon over three months of isolation in his father's remote hunting cabin in Northwestern Wisconsin. Struggling with illness, a breakup, and personal frustration, Vernon created the nine tracks using minimal equipment, layering his signature falsetto to create haunting, choral-like arrangements.

The album received near-universal acclaim, eventually being certified Platinum by the RIAA. It was ranked #461 on 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2020.
