Once the core files are installed, the focus shifts to activation. Bentley utilizes a Licensing Management Tool to handle software permissions. For legitimate corporate or individual users, you will typically use a Site Activation Key provided by your administrator. Open the License Management Tool from the Windows Start menu, navigate to the Activation Wizard, and select the option for "SELECTed Service Partner" or "Non-SELECT user." Enter your server name—usually "bentley.com"—followed by your unique serial activation key.
After the initial setup, take a moment to configure your workspace. MicroStation V8i SS3 introduced enhanced point cloud support and improved DWG file compatibility. You can access these features by going to the Workspace menu and selecting Configuration. Setting your seed files and cell libraries at this stage will save significant time during your first project.
If you are a student or a new user testing the software, ensure you are using the correct version-specific key. Using a key meant for SS2 or SS4 on an SS3 installation can lead to "Trial Mode" warnings or immediate software expiration. After entering the key, click the Test Connection button. A successful connection indicates that your software is now verified and ready for use.
Before beginning, verify that your workstation meets the necessary hardware requirements. You will need a Windows-based operating system, at least 2GB of RAM, and a graphics card that supports DirectX 9.0c or higher. Having these prerequisites in place prevents common errors during the initialization of the graphics engine.
If you encounter a "License Not Found" error upon launching, return to the License Management Tool and ensure your activation status is listed as "Checked Out" or "Verified." Sometimes, a simple restart of the Bentley Licensing Service in the Windows Services panel resolves communication glitches between the software and the license server.
